King Philip's War (A major war that affected the Pennacook Tribe), Kancagmus(grandson of Passaconway, and last leader of the confederacy)
Some Historical Events:
In 1675, during the period of King Philip’s War, “led by King Philip of the Wampanoag, Kancamagus(the last leader of the confederacy), had decided to keep peace with the English colonists. His cousin Paugus [though]...favored the path of war” (Waldman 220).
Both of them were grandsons of Passaconaway, “the first Pennacook sachem(leader) to establish relations and trade with the settlers” (Waldman 220).
Eventually, the English tricked the peaceful groups into a sporting meet at Dover, but killed most of the guests and sold others into slavery. Making Kancamagus enemies with the English.
Ultimately, during the French and Indian wars between France and England. He made an attack on the settlement at Dover. “Where a woman tricked the settlers into leaving the gates of their stockade open” (Waldman 220), with many settlers dying in the action.
“In retaliation, the English convinced their allies the Mohawk to attack the Pennacook.” (Waldman 220). Destroying many villages, causing Kancamagus and his troops to take positions at Lake Winnisquam. Eventually repelling them, and sneaking away.
In summary, during King Philip’s War, even though the Pennacook tried to stay neutral, a lot of members were killed, attacked, and captured. While others fled to parts of Canada and other tribes, other members were sold to slavery.
